The Latics followed up their draw at Clyde with a fine display at home to Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday. Craig Davies got the show on the road in the tenth minute with the opening goal. Davies won possession from a throw in and cleverly chipped the ball over Lee Grant in the Wednesday goal. A brave sliding attempted save from Beevers was ruled out as the referee had decided that the ball had already crossed the goalline.

Michael Ricketts (pictured) doubled the score just before the break when he slotted home from an Andy Liddell corner. Wednesday had some good possession but they failed to make any effect on the home defence, with their only first half chance coming from old boy Jermaine Johnson but his effort was blasted over from 20 yards.

In the second half Davies was unlucky after his shot hit a defender and Ricketts had the same misfortune in front of goal. Mark Crossley had to be alert on a couple of occasions before he made way for first year scholar Josh Ollerenshaw with a quarter of an hour of the game remaining. 16 year old Ollerenshaw did enough to keep the Owls at bay after only a month of training with the youth team. In the final minutes, Deane Smalley hit a half volley which Grant did well to save. It was a convincing win and Athletic now travel to Macclesfield on Saturday for their final pre-season build up game.
