The Latics slumped to a disappointing home defeat to Swindon in a game they really should have won. They should have taken the lead in the 10th. minute after Calvin Zola (pictured) was brought down and Heywood was sent off for a professional foul. Zola opted to take the kick himself but his effort came back off the post and Scott Vernon blasted the rebound over. It wasn’t going to be Athletic’s day as the tone was set! However the Latics tried they couldn’t breach the ten men of Swindon. Ernie Cooksey missed several efforts but he was eventually named man of the match. To make matters worse it was ex-Latics loan striker Sam Parkin who got the winner for the visitors when he managed to bundle home the winner from close in.

After the match, manager Iain Dowie commented, “I never sensed that it was going to be one of those days even after Calvin's penalty hit the post. I thought our first half performance was excellent. We created good chances with good interplay and lots of good delivery into the box. We came up against a keeper who had an inspired display. The goal we gave away was a sloppy goal. It's a bitter pill to swallow but you've got to be big enough to take it on the chin and we didn't get what we deserved today. They rode their luck a little bit but they dug in and got a result. We're bitterly disappointed with the manner of the goal and also a little with the second half display but we still did enough to have won the game.”
