Both managers were left disappointed after Oldham and Blackpool had to settle for a point each from their hard fought North West derby.
Seasiders boss Steve McMahon rued the chances that got away in a first half dominated by his lively team.
And Iain Dowie was furious with the Latics display before rookie defender Will Haining equalised in first half stoppage time.
McMahon said: "Its two points lost because we dominated for a long time and footballed Oldham to death - they must have thought they had died and gone to heaven when they scored.
"We should have been three up by then but I can't fault my players. They showed their best football side in the first half and a strong physical side in the second." Dowie admitted: "For half an hour we were no where near good enough and it was as poor a team performance as I have seen all season from us.
"I could have taken off any of my defenders apart from Haining because we totally lacked organisation.
"We were better in the second half because of our passing but it would have been hard on Blackpool if they had lost.
"We will work long and hard on cutting out the errors and we have a massive game coming up at Crewe on Sunday." Oldham keeper Les Pogliacomi was outstanding, making the first of several saves when Scott Taylor broke into the box after only two minutes.
Richie Wellens also went close and John Murphy headed straight into the AustraliansÂ’ arms before Murphy broke the deadlock.
Oldham defender Fitz Hall lost possession in a dangerous area in the 17th minute and Martin Bullock crossed from the right for Murphy to glance home from six yards.
Wayne Andrews hit the post with a free header for Oldham but they were fortunate to be only one behind when Haining levelled.
Darren Sheridan supplied the assist and Haining sent header from eight yards beyond Phil Barnes for his second senior goal.
Oldham dominated the second half but created few chances. The nearest anyone came to a winner came from John Hills, whose free kick forced Pogliacomi into a flying stop.
