Athletic manager Dave Penney watched his team fight to a well earned draw at the Valley on Saturday and admitted that it was a huge point. The goal-less draw left the Latics with a five match unbeated run, albeit the last two games have resulted in draws. Penney told the Latics official website, "If they had won they could have gone top, it's a big ground and a big crowd and never an easy place to come. But these games, like MK Dons, bring the best out of our players."

We've had the ball in the net and the lads really didn't think there was much wrong with it to be honest. They've hit the bar, admittedly, but we've protected Dean Brill well. The defensive four, with Jon Worthington sat in front, were immense. We've stopped Shelvey playing by putting Jon on him. But when they can bring on million pound players we are always up against it. We had to keep our shape and be disciplined; we did that and got the rewards."

With chants of 'Boring Boring Oldham' ringing round the Valley Penney commented, "It's terrific - it shows we're doing something right - we're not going to come here and roll over. I'd happily have fans do that to us again this season! Gregan (pictured) has been struggling with his ankle all week, but he's old school and he just wants to carry on playing. Pav's playing against ex-internationals, but he's been exceptional, without his hold up and link up play we can't get out and he's done great with that. Southampton are another big budget team and we'll have to work hard again and look to get the three points."
