The Ched Evans saga continued today. It was announced yesterday that the club would be signing the convicted rapist but the board had to meet this morning to determine whether or not it is the correct choice. A deluge of negative publicity against the club has made them consider again just what to do. Two club sponsors have indicated that they will withdraw their sponsorship should the club sign the controversial striker. The board promised that an announcement would be made this afternoon but the statement from Neil Joy was just to confirm that an announcement would not be made! It is hoped that a decision will be made tomorrow.
Last month the club announced that it would not be signing Evans nor would they allow him to train. On 1st December they stated, “The board will not be extending an invitation for Ched Evans to train with Oldham Athletic nor will we be offering him a contract. The club will not be making any further comment on this subject.”
Today they announced, “Oldham Athletic is not at this stage making any official announcement with regard to the speculation concerning Ched Evans. Whilst acknowledging the considerable media attention, we continue to have conversations with representative bodies such as the PFA and will conduct due diligence with regard to any decision we make on this matter. Although it has been reported that a press conference would be held we will officially advise if and when any such event will take place. The club would also request that its stakeholders and partners position and privacy be respected until this matter has been concluded. We will not be making any further comment for the time being.
