Wilkinson could be out for season

Wes Wilkinson, who tore knee cartilage at Bristol City, may be out for the rest of the season and may eventually need surgery on his knee. The 19 year old is currently playing through the pain and Brian Talbot is hoping that he may still play some part in the Latics fight against relegation.

Talbot said, “Wes is struggling, and it’s case of whether or not he can get through games. Ideally he will play to the end of the season, but we know that might not be possible. We will keep monitoring the situation and possibly make a decision after the Wrexham match in a couple of weeks. We have one or two other options up front, but Wes has done quite well and I would like him to be available.”

The Latics start a gruelling spell of five games in 14 days starting with the six pointer at home Peterborough on Saturday. Of his teams chances Talbot said, “Our aim is to be safe by the end of that fortnight – there is a job to do and the players will be ready. Only one team in the division (Wycombe) has won fewer games than us, so we have to be positive and aggressive in our play. We need to do a bit more up front, especially in our home games. So far we have looked quite well organised – and the commitment and desire are certainly there – but we need more cutting edge.”
