Wijnhard deal looks in doubt

It’s beginning to look like Clyde Wijnhard will not now become an Athletic player. The Portuguese FA are prepared to grant International clearance for Wijnhard to play against Walsall on the condition that Athletic will offer him a contract. As the club are not completely sure that their former player is fully recovered from his knee problems they are cautious about offering him a contract.

Brian Talbot said, “We would have to sign Clyde to a long-term contract rather than using him as a non-contract player but I think it’s too much of a risk. Something like a month-to-month deal is a non-starter because he says he wants more security. If he can get that elsewhere fair enough, but it wouldn’t be right to commit ourselves financially without knowing he is properly fit. I’m disappointed because Clyde looked good in training, the players know him and he would have been a popular signing for the fans. We haven’t given up completely, but it looks as though he has been ripped out of our grasp. The international transfer rules seem to change all the time, and they never get less complicated.”

Wijnhard is hoping that a Swedish or a North East England club (Sunderland?) will offer him a contract through to next summer after he is exploring the possibilities.
