Tranmere loss is a kick in the pants

It was a case of back down to earth with a big bump for the Latics as they travelled to Tranmere on Friday night. With two victories behind them, and having briefly flirted with the 'top of the league' spot, any result would have put them back in pole position looking down on the rest of the following pack. However, as they have found out in previous encounters with Tranmere, a trip to Prenton Park is always a daunting task. Tranmere had only picked up one point in two matches so could the momentum continue and could the boys in blue pull off the result which would cement their aspirations of automatic promotion back to the Champuionship?

No! It didn't take long as the Latics were under the cosh from the off and it was back to the usual Tranmere-Latics bogey game. Gone was the neat attractive play which was ably demonstrated against Yeovil and Swindon and the tactics amazed the large following band of supporters. Instead of the one-touch feet to feet play which was previously so effective, the Latics resorted to long, high balls which were supposed to catch the 'small' Tranmere defenders. It was a tactical bunder and if nothing else, should act as a wake-up call for the team and for manager Ronnie Moore.

In the end, a 4-0 drubbing was flattering for Tranmere but in truth, the Latics were lucky to get 'nil'. We never expected to go the whole season undefeated but tomorrows visit of Chesterfield will really test the character of the team and management. If they can bounce back and give a convincing performance they could get back up there and send a message to the rest of the Division that they really mean business. Can't wait. Bring it on!
