Deane Smalley has been praised by boss John Sheridan after his successful return to the team at Bristol Rovers. Smalley was selected to replace the rested Andy Liddell and Shez singled him out as the man of the match. Sheridan told Latics World, "Deane was the best player on the pitch on Tuesday. He has given me a decision to make and that's what I want from the kid. I could see in his face he wasn't happy with me not picking him, but he definitely didn't let himself down when called upon. He was positive, ran with the ball when he had to, kept the ball well and kept up an excellent work-rate."
"I've told Deane to watch Lids and see how he goes about his game, and even in training. Even though Lids is out of the team, he'll give Deane little chats and help him learn. If Deane does that, he'll be a very good player. He's come in and given me food for thought. Now, do I leave him in or out? Hopefully Deane can replicate this kind of performance frequently. He's not a light switch who can just turn on or off. I need consistency in his game."
