Shez hopes for a good cup run

John Sheridan is hoping that his team will be going on some good cup runs this season. It all kicks off tonight when Mansfield visit Boundary Park for the first round Carling Cup game. Ex-Latics player Billy Dearden brings his team to the game following picking up a useful point at relegated Brentford last Saturday.

Sheridan is taking nothing for granted and told the official website, "We've had Mansfield watched and they're a decent side. They're in a lower league so we'll be expected to win, but I'll be concentrating on us and not Mansfield Town. If the players take that attitude into the game we will win. I want us to go as far as we can and we have to believe we can make progress in this competition. You need a bit of luck in the draw, and fortunately we've got a home tie. People will expect us to win, and the lads must go into the game with the right attitude."

"As manager I will pick the team I think will win the game. Andy Liddell didn't play (against swansea) but he's a good pro. When I told him he nodded his head and said he understood my situation. Gary McDonald is the same. They will both get their opportunity and it's important that when the players on the fringes are called upon they step straight in and do a job. But I'm not going to give too much away, you'll all have to wait and see."
