Sheridan hangs up his boots again

John Sheridan has announced his retirement from playing for the second time. Sheridan previously retired but was coaxed back because of the perilous state of things at Boundary Park at the start of the season. He is to take up his new post as assistant to Brian Talbot who will be announced as the new Latics manager later today.

Sheridan said, “My knee can’t stand up to it. I’ve seen myself on video and I carry the injury too much. I was set on not playing at all this season, but I was willing to help out when we had a serious lack of players. We’re fighting relegation and I’ll definitely help again if the new manager asks, but I’m hoping it’s over for me. I don’t regret playing this year, and the game at my old club Sheffield Wednesday was one of the highlights of my career. I’ll do whatever I can to keep us up, but it’s time for my second retirement – and, to be honest, it will come as a relief.”

Sheridan has made 25 appearances this season, scoring five penalties in the process, and also passed the amazing milestone of 600 league games.
