Athletic never fail do they? After a miraculous performance against a top team they always seem to have the knack of stooping to the lowest possible standards in performance. After a convincing 3-2 success at Millwall and a creditable 1-1 draw against Leeds United they slipped to a demoralising 0-1 home defeat to Colchester United. Gone was the flowing football and no player came out with much credibility after an abysmal showing in front a a rapidly diminishing home crowd.
People were leaving the ground after the game vowing that they would not return again to watch such dribble by a set of players who didn't have enough pride to play for the the blue shirt. With "Keep The Faith" emblazoned on their tops they should be setting an example to the fans who religiously follow the team through thick and thin in a time when money is tight and competition is rife.
Manager John Sheridan blasted the performance and told Latics World, "The first half was shocking and I apologise to the fans again because we really were a shambles. We had a go in the second half and created opportunities, but we didn't take them and we just keep letting ourselves down. It seems to happen at a certain point and we are putting pressure on ourselves because it's happening in too many games. I'm stuck for words - I don't know who I was watching in the first half because those were the same players who got results against Millwall and Leeds. Training will be very hard because I will not accept that kind of performance and we need to address it quickly."
With off field rumbles building it's time for the club backroom staff to take action and start to be pro-active before the season that promised so much becomes a season that will be looked back on yet again as being an "if only" season.
