"We will work hard on his fitness when he is released, and obviously it will take some time for him to become match fit. Having said that, once he is established in the club I am sure our fans will find him an exciting and exceptionally skilled player. I hope in the fullness of time that Lee Hughes is judged on his playing abilities rather than his past history."
Sheridan backs Hughes move
Latics manager John Sheridan has declared that he is behind the plan to give Lee Hughes another chance once he is released from prison. He told the official website, "The signing of Lee Hughes is a wonderful acquisition for the club. I was an admirer of him when he was banging in the goals for West Brom, and the help of my Directors in acquiring him has been invaluable. I know Lee from his Premiership days, and for us to sign a player with such experience and skill is a plus point for the fans. I do not condone the serious nature of the offences he committed, and I accept that people will have various views. My own opinion is that everyone is deserving of another chance in life, and Lee Hughes is no different to anyone else in this respect."
