After the Latics suffered another defeat at Sheffield United, manager Stephen Robinson explained his feelings about his team propping up the division which again emphasied the need for a goalscorer.
He said, “I think a lot of teams come here to sit back and wait to get beat but I don’t think we did that at all. Anybody who watched that game for the first 70 minutes of the game, you wouldn’t have said they were top of the table and we were bottom of the table. The result is the same as last week but our performance was very different. We were positive, created chances but I think their second goal is clear to see to everyone that it was a foul. It’s an embarrassing decision but we are very disappointed to lose the game.”
“The difference between the two teams was Billy Sharp. I think if we had Billy Sharp in our team today we would have won the game. Brian Wilson came in and did well. I thought the three lads at the back were excellent. Dummigan and McLaughlin gave us the pace and energy out wide when you play that system and I thought Darius Osei was outstanding. He is a kid learning his trade but he was very good. He won more headers than any striker has won for me all season so that was a bonus but he will get another chance. We’ve got people who we are desperately trying to get in on January 1st. if the embargo is off. We are bottom of the league so it’s not easy to pull something out of the bag but we are trying our very best to get people in. We know the difference between being a decent mid table side and that is taking our chances.”
