The Latics' fans are still waiting for any official announcement following the media stories that Paul Scholes is the frontrunner to become their new manager. Former England midfielder Scholes, 44, grew up supporting the Latics as a child and has repeatedly been linked with the role. He wanted the job when his favourite player, Frankie Bunn, was offered the role but since Bunn's sacking rumours are increasing that the deal is almost done and dusted.
Scholes was at Moss Rose on Saturday to witness a poor performance as the Latics lost 2-1 at Macclesfield. Newspaper talk has indicated that Latics'owner Abdallah Lemsagam will return from a trip to Dubai next week when Scholes could sign an 18 month deal to take over at Boundary Park.
As Scholes is a co-owner at National League side Salford City it could be that he has to sever his links with that club due to FA rules regarding involvement at two different clubs.
