Ex-Latics manager Dave Penney was obviously delighted at beating his former team and achieving his first win as Bristol Rovers manager. He said, “It is nice to get three points and a clean sheet - a clean sheet has been long overdue. The last one we got was against Hartlepool and then we managed to go on and beat Swindon, and today we managed to keep a clean sheet and beat a good side in Oldham. It was a real end to end game on a heavy pitch, and there were some tired players out there at the end. The win is massive, we didn't like losing those games on the trot, it is nice to come into a changing room and see players with smiles on their faces. Hopefully the togetherness we have got now we can carry on, like we should have carried on from the Swindon game.”
“It is not finished, we are still down there, we still need points, we have got 30, we probably need another 20 or 22 and that gives us something to aim for. We are delighted and we will take that little bit of luck, although things didn't go all our way in the first half. I think the midweek break did us the world of good, it enabled us to get a couple of new lads in and freshen things up, rest a few players up, and they have come back nice and sharp. Conrad Logan had to make a save after five minutes, as we didn't start the game particularly well. That save gave the back four and the rest of the team an insight into what he can do. He is a confident boy and he has come in and integrated with the squad straight away.”
“I don't think the pitch really had an effect on the game today, although there were a few tired legs come the end. I don't think it is going to get any worse than it was Tuesday night, the groundsman has been on there since and settled it down, it didn't play too bad. Until the warm weather comes and the grass starts growing it is going to be tough for the groundsman.”
He finished with a statement familiar to Oldham fans when he said, “We need people to hold their hands up and except blame and get on with it. The spirit is coming, and it should get better with results.”
