Out of contract players still out of luck

Twelve of Athletic’s squad members are out of contract this summer but Athletic’s boss, Iain Dowie, is still unsure about what the future holds for the club. The Latics coach still doesn’t know what funds will be available to keep
them at the club. Chris Moore will stop his £50,000 weekly wage bill payment although he has pledged to keep backing the club on a smaller scale.

Dowie is trying to keep his players focussed on promotion for the remaining
weeks but he is obviously concerned that off the field activities could have an effect on moral. The twelve players out of contract are Lee Duxbury, Tony Carss, David Miskelly, Carlo Corazzin, Darren Sheridan, John Eyre, Wayne Gill,
Julien Baudet, David Eyres, Duncan Roberts, Wayne Andrews and Clyde Wijnhard.

Iain Dowie said, “I would like to sort things out as soon as possible, but I don’t know what the budget is going to be. It isn’t an ideal situation because the players are thinking about their families and loved ones, which I understand
completely. A stable ship is what you want, but the financial position doesn’t allow that so it’s important we all concentrate on our jobs. The game will have about 1,200 players out of contract soon, but if we achieve something this season it might provide opportunities – unfortunately, that’s the law of the jungle.”
