New striker Matt Smith has been backed by Solihull Moors chairman Nigel Collins. The 21-year-old will take League One by storm said Collins, “Oldham have got themselves a very good signing in Matt. He is obviously a big lad who is strong in the air, but he also has good feet and he likes to play. I think he is quite versatile because he puts himself about, but keeping it on the ground suits him as well. It is a step up for him so I don’t know if Oldham will want to throw him straight into first team action — maybe they will see how he performs in pre-season. But if they need goals they have certainly made a good choice. I don’t see why he can’t continue to score goals at a higher level. I think he will make a big impression in League One.”
Smith said, “I heard there was interest from a number of clubs, but the most came from Oldham and after speaking to Paul Dickov, I was convinced this was the club for me. I am not pretending there is not a big gap, but it is up to me to work hard and if I do, I am confident I can make the step up. There were a lot of young players at Solihull and they were hungry to succeed. It is similar here and they are the perfect ingredients for a successful side.”
