New players wanted before Saturday

Saturday’s friendly against Manchester City raised around £100,000 for the Boundary Park coffers and manager Iain Dowie hopes that some of the money can be used to bring in reinforcements before the start of the coming season.

The City game emphasised the need for new blood and Dowie said, “The squad we have is not sustainable for 46 league games. We will be in serious trouble if we do not make additions to the squad and maybe Saturday is a wake-up call to the powers that be. There is a fine line between making sure you run things properly and not running it with any professionalism. I demand professionalism from my players, but we need little things available like fruit, energy drinks and bottled water.”

Eight of the 17 players used on Saturday were aged 20 or under and Dowie hopes to add a few loan players before Saturday’s season kick off against Brighton. One piece of good news is that David Eyres’ injury is not as bad as it was originally thought. Dowie went on, “It is just a little knock, which is a relief as David is an important player and one of our better ones.”

Sean Jarvis (pictured) was delighted with the 11,000 plus crowd against City and said, “The turnout on Saturday was amazing with the supporters of Latics and Manchester City turning out in force and to see Boundary Park packed to the rafters was inspirational after coming so close to going out of business. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Manchester City for sending such a strong side and for their supporters for turning out in such numbers to help raise much needed funds. Now we have to focus on Saturday and the start of the new season with the visit to Boundary Park of Brighton and Hove Albion and I would urge all supporters to make the match a cause for celebration. It would be a great start to the new season to see a bumper gate here at Boundary Park on Saturday and I am calling all supporters to make a date in their diaries to make sure you are here at Boundary Park to support Iain Dowie and the team for the first game of the new season. It's the start of a new era. The community of Oldham will play a major part in the way the club moves forward and the match on Saturday is a good starting point.”
