MOORE LEAVES FOR BARNSLEY

Last updated : 01 April 2005 By The Chairman
Ronnie Moore has left Athletic in a shock move to Barnsley. Moore had been linked with the Barnsley job ever since ex-Latics favourite Andy Ritchie took over at Oakwell in a caretaker role. The move has angered Athletic’s owners as the timing could not have come at a worse time. With Barnsley in a mid-table position and Latics still not safe from relegation it really doesn’t make sense for him to move at such a crucial time in Athletic's season.

A disappointed Simon Corney told the official site, “I am disappointed with Ronnie as he was having such an impact on the team and its performances, especially after yesterday’s public statement that he wanted “to complete the job he has begun at Boundary Park.” Gordon Shepherd, the Barnsley Chairman, has been watching Moore’s progress. He made an official approach yesterday which, under the terms of Moore’s contract, we had to allow and Moore made the decision that he would return to his Yorkshire roots. Barry Taylor, the Barnsley Director, brought the forms to a secret location in Oldham late last night and the deal was sealed.”

But it’s not all bad news - Paul Scholes will take over as Player/Manager of Oldham Athletic with immediate effect. We had to move quickly to ensure continuity and the 30 year old former England International has never made any secrets that he would love to end his playing career at his home town team. He is a frequent visitor to our games when he is not playing and remains in close links with the club. Because the transfer deadline for this season has passed Scholes will not be able to play until next season and will concentrate on the coaching side of the game. We are committed to making Athletic a success and we hope the fans will back Paul with the same enthusiasm as they did Mr. Moore.”

Scholes was not available for comment and there is no indication as to who will be his assistant.
