Make or break for Appleby

Matty Appleby is hoping to end his 15-month injury nightmare when he plays at Wigan in a reserve team game. Appleby is still having pain when he kicks a ball and wants to try it out in a competitive game. He does realise that he may have no option and may still have to retire from the game at the tender age of 31. Appleby has only managed 29 games since signing from Barnsley two years ago.

Manager Iain Dowie said, “Matty has worked hard and is naturally fit, so it’s a case of whether he can do the twisting and turning. He will only find out by playing in games, but it would be great news to have him available again. Apart from his experience, he would give us that ability to play a solid four across midfield – things would look quite good if we had Matty, John Eyre, Paul Murray, Danny Boshell, Ernie Cooksey, David Eyres, two Sheridans and everybody else fit. Matty can also play at the back and, although he’ll need a few reserve games, we are all hoping it works out well.”
