Latics offer trial to youngster

20 year old James Curtis has been offered a trial at the Latics by Assistant Manager Tony Philliskirk after some impressive displays for Unibond League members Gateshead. Curtis impressed the Latics scouting staff with some solid performances at the heart of defence and the youngster is improving with each game. Curtis is 6ft 2in and powerful in the air and has attracted the attention of other league clubs but Philliskirk was first to make a move. Curtis’ first real action was to play in a behind closed doors friendly at Crewe for the Latics Reserves.

Gateshead manager Derek Bell said, “James joined us from Washington after I spotted him playing in the Northern League. He is a big lad, a strong and imposing figure in any defensive line up and has adapted well to life in the Unibond. It has come as no suprise to me that a team with the calibre of Oldham have come knocking at our door. James has been invited for a trial but if this doesn't work out for James, I'm sure that Oldham will be the first of many teams that knock at our day to enquire about his services.”

Curtis follows in the footsteps of Rob Jones, also of Gateshead, who was also on trial at Oldham last season before eventually signing for Stockport.
