Athletic have been linked with Nottingham Forest's John Thompson. The Republic of Ireland international is a free agent after being released by Forest, for whom he made nearly 150 appearances. He can play anywhere in the back line as well as midfield.The Latics could have competition from former boss Ronnie Moore who took the 25 year old on loan at Tranmere. Moore would like to sign the versatile player on a permanent basis. Thompson played against the Latics three times last season, twice for Tranmere and once for Forest although he was on the losing side every time.
