The Latics finally got it right against Wigan Athletic with a 2-1 League Cup first-round win on Tuesday night. Ryan Flynn got the ball rolling in the 18th minute with an individual jinking run into the box that was ended with a perfectly placed shot into the bottom right corned which left the Wigan keeper clutching air. Wigan pulled one back in the 34th minute when the Latics defence went to sleep. It all erupted just before half time and Wigan's Jake Buxton was shown a red card after a wicked high tackle on Marc Klok.
The second half was end to end but the Latics put in a sterling performance with many individual players starting to shine. Josh Law got the winner when it looked like the game might move to extra time and it was a well deserved winner as the Latics outshone their opponents, It could have been more as both Lee Erwin and Peter Clarke missed clear headers that would have wound up the game much earlier. However, it was a useful building block as, after six successive defeats, it should give the lads some confidence as they build up to their first home league match of the season against Walsall on Saturday.
