It is rumoured that the Latics are interested in former Manchester United and Hull City winger Cameron Stewart who is now a free agent.
The 26-year-old and had been keeping fit by training with Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic and Port Vale.
Stewart has been invited to train with the Latics and Ritchie Wellens is hoping that he will sign contract until the end of the season.
