Latics fall to late winner

The Latics fell to a late winner at Swansea but manager John Sheridan felt his side were hard done to. Cruising to a point, the winning goal came courtesy of Fabian Brandy just five minutes from the end of a dour battle. Gary McDonald scored a 66th. minute own goal after a slide in but Craig Davies (pictured) was brought down and he scored the resulting penalty to bring the scores level.

Sheridan told Latics World, "I'm disappointed because the lads battled hard and worked their socks off. When we got it back to 1-1 I thought we'd get something from the game, and we would have deserved to do so. I was comfortable with how we were doing in the first half, but Swansea are a decent team who pass the ball well. They created one or two opportunities in the second half and we rode our luck at times, but we've given away two very poor goals. For the first we had the ball on the edge of their box. I think two bad decisions cost us the game. Mark Allott should have put the ball into their box before they broke for the first goal, and Stefan Stam should have put the ball into the stand for their second. That was a shame, because otherwise we worked hard and defended when we had to."

"We didn't create too much today, but Swansea is a hard place to come and play a team who are playing with bags of confidence at the moment. Teams at the top seem to get that little bit of luck, and so it proved with the wicked deflection for the second goal. We worked hard although one or two of the lads looked leggy towards the end, and it's a shame we didn't get a point as a draw would have been a good result. This is obviously a setback, but now we must concentrate on the games ahead because they're coming up thick and fast."
