Latics face FA fines

The Latics picked up seven yellow cards in Tuesday’s game at Oakwell and will be hit with a fine by the FA. Michael Clegg, John Eyre, David Eyres, Dean Holden, Mark Hudson, John Sheridan and Paul Murray were the guilty players and a $2,500 minimum fine is compulsory. The FA are also charging the Latics with misconduct for the two sendings off in the Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe in August. Darren Sheridan (pictured) and Danny Boshell were both dismissed and the club faces a charge of “failure to conduct themselves in an orderly fashion.” Sheridan has just returned from a three match ban for his red card and could suffer even further consequences. If the Latics are found guilty they would also face a fine.

Of the game at Barnsley, manager Iain Dowie said, “The referee went way over the top because nobody can tell me it was a dirty game. Some of the cautions were an absolute joke, particularly for Michael Clegg and Mark Hudson but refs. seem to get promoted when they do that kind of thing. We are getting some depth back in the squad and it was important for Chris Killen to get on for 10 or 15 minutes. We took Scott Vernon off, but that was no reflection of his performance because he did well and I’m delighted he scored a goal. That was the least we deserved after dominating for long periods against a decent side like Barnsley. I thought it would be snatched away from us when they got their penalty, but thankfully the break went our way. We are unbeaten in four games now, which shows how well the lads are responding to what we are trying to do. The shaft of light is there for us and, hopefully, a similar thing will develop off the pitch sooner rather than later.”
