The Swans got a 3-6 mauling at home by Blackpool, who will now play the Latics home and away for the right to play at the new Wembley in the play-off final. The eventual winner will be promoted to the Championship. The Latics are now three matches off promotion, and whatever the outcome it has been a very successful first season for new manager John Sheridan.
The manager told the official website, "It was always going to be edgy today with them already relegated. This was a difficult game to approach but we knew we had to win, and we played well and produced a professional performance. We had the one nervous moment and Andy Liddell probably should have scored in the first half, but we got the goal in the end and that makes things easier. I was confident at 0-0 at half-time. I told the lads that they'd get that goal if they carried on playing the way they were, and I didn't mention the Swansea score. We were concentrating on what we had to do, and we did that well in the end. I was very pleased with the overall performance. In the first half at Brighton and today we've looked a decent side."
Chesterfield manager and ex-Latics player, Lee Richardson added "We've had 11 games this season which have ended 1-0 and we've lost ten of them. That tells you something and we need to put it right next time."
