Latics burst through budget ceiling

Athletic will need to further reduce their playing staff as they have already gone through the seasons budget. Manager John Sheridan has exceeded his limit by more than £100,000. The discrepancy is the main reason why the Latics cannot attract and experienced strikers to the club.

Simon Corney explained, “In terms of the budget we set ourselves, rather than the one imposed by the salary cap, we're already over by a significant amount. Yes we are looking for a striker, but they are difficult to find without paying the ridiculous amounts being touted around. We reduced our playing budget this season because of the club's overall losses, and hopefully one or two players may be leaving."

"I understand the fans' frustration, but we all know what can happen when a club spends too much money on players and wages. We invested significantly last season when players like Chris Porter cost £100,000 and Andy Liddell was given a three-year contract, and we still believe in the people who are already here. A top-six finish is realistic with our current squad, although mid-table would also be a good achievement in the manager's first season.”
