Killen out of Stalybridge game

Injury has once again forced the Latics striker Chris Killen to be out of action. He will miss the pre-season friendly at Stalybridge tomorrow and the club have sent him to the Football Association's rehab centre at Lilleshall. Although Killen has been working hard on his fitness and has taken part in all of pre-season training so far, the flare up of his ongoing hamsting problems is causing concern for Brian Talbot.

Talbot said, “Chris has trained every day, but is still complaining about tightness in his hamstrings. He has missed too many games and that is why I want to try to sort out what is causing the problems.” Scott Vernon, Rodney Jack and Jermaine Johnson are likely to be given a run out as striker and all will be trying to impress in what will be an opportunity to claim a starting role when the season kicks off a Luton. Wes Wilkinson is unlikely to play a role in the game as he has received some minor setbacks in his recovery following his knee cartilage operation.

The new league ruling that only six substitutions are allowed in a friendly is also a cause for concern and Talbot commented, “I hope common sense will prevail. I am concerned about injuries because we have players who have not played for more than two months. We want to break them in slowly and tomorrow’s match and Saturday’s at Nantwich are primarily for fitness purposes in getting players back on the pitch and kicking the ball.”
