Chris Killen (pictured) could make a surprise return to the Latics squad to play at Barnsley. Killen will probably take a spot on the bench after being out of action through injury sustained on the opening day of the season against Brighton. The striker suffered with a foot fracture and also missed most of the pre-season with a similar injury.

Defender David Beharall could also make a return to action on Wednesday in a specially arranged reserve team match against Bury’s second string at Little Wembley. Beharall had been suffering from tendonitis in the knee and surgery was required to which Beharall has made good recovery.

Darren Sheridan also returns to the squad to face his old club at Barnsley after missing the previous three matches through suspension. It is anticipated that Sheridan Jr. will replace his elder brother who is suffering from fatigue after playing in several recent games although Dowie said, “Darren might not go straight back in the team.”

Mikael Antoine Curier could be recalled to the starting line up following illness.
