Athletic's improved form continued with the 2-0 win over Swindon on Tuesday. For a club who had collected just 21 points from the first 26 games, they have turned things around under John Sheridan, and have now taken 23 points from their last 13 games, with three consecutive clean sheets. Fleetwood also won 2-0 at home but it gives the Latics a fighting chance to climb out of the relegation zone, a feat which should be achieved with another win over Walsall on Saturday. The Saddlers currently sit in third place in the league so will be no push-overs, but with confidence at a high, nothing is impossible. Liam Kelly and Curtis Main did the damage with the two well taken goals that killed off Swindon Town.
John Sheridan was obviously delighted and said after the game, “I thought we fully deserved the result. The most important thing is getting the three points from every game we play. It was a tricky game tonight as Swindon are a good passing side, even though they have been leaking goals recently. They can really hurt you and I was aware of that before the game. I don’t think we pass teams off the pitch but I tell you what, I wouldn’t like to play against us at the moment. We work our socks off, and we got in Swindon’s face tonight and made it difficult for them. The stamina in the team was excellent and I think we overpowered them and deserved the points. We work our socks off as a team. We try and play and make it as easy as possible to defend. When you get a clean sheet, it’s good for the defenders and goalkeeper but I think from 1-11 it was a good performance.”
