Goalkeeper crisis over

Chris Day the former Spurs, Crystal Palace and QPR goalkeeper has signed a two year deal for Athletic. Day (6'-4”) was released by QPR recently and was on loan at Preston for most of last season. He also played in goal when Athletic visited Crewe last week and was the keeper who played brilliantly against the Latics in the 2003 play-offs. He went on to win six caps for England under-21s. Les Pogliacomi was recently criticised by Ronnie Moore and it would not be a surprise if Day makes the starting line up against Yeovil on Saturday.
Chris Swailes has been named as Athletic's new captain but as he is out with an ankle injury Andy Liddell will take over as acting captain in his absence. Moore said, “I went for Swailes because he’s a tough, natural leader who organises people and says what he thinks. But Andy Liddell is a similar kind of lad – he’s a winner and commands respect from the other players. People look up to Andy because he has played at the highest level and knows what it takes to bring success. I also considered Richie Wellens, which shows we’ve got a few strong characters around the place.”
