The Latics travelled to League newcomers Fleetwood Town on Friday night and came away with an impressive 3-1 pre-season victory. Team captain Dean Furman scored two goals in a match where new signing Cliff Byrne made his debut with an impeccable performance at right back. Robbie Simpson scored goal number three before the break. It was a great win for the Latics who could have easily doubled the score in the first hour of the game.
Andy Mangham pulled a goal back for Fleetwood in the second half but the visitors were never troubled and easily won at a canter. Manager Paul Dickov said of the victory, "It was outstanding for an hour and we are beginning to look fitter and fitter. It is also pretty obvious we need to sign the Portuguese striker we have on trial."
