Manager Iain Dowie was lamenting on his first defeat in 10 games and said, “I
don't accept the club's problems had any bearing at all on what happened out there. Maybe it adds to the pressure, but you shouldn't think about things you can't affect — anyone who uses it as an excuse is a poor professional. The simple facts are that we had a lot of players below par and Luton were better than us on the day. When I watch the game on video, there will be so much that's chronically bad I'll have reams of paper in front of me. We passed the ball well for 15 minutes and looked like scoring again, but then our passing became sloppy. They dealt with our forwards better then we handled theirs, and they also had the edge in midfield. We didn't defend with authority and the lads are very disappointed that the goals we gave away were so poor. It might have been a draw on chances created, but we need to be winning games like this if we are going to get promotion".
There were some plusses — Will Haining was terrific when he came on, Chris Killen (pictured) needed 90 minutes after his hamstring injury and Tony Carss was very good in the first half — but the fact we lost should burn in everybody's soul. The fans deserve more entertainment than we gave them, so it's time for us to shrug off the disappointment and show our character. This is a hiccup, but if you had offered me one defeat in 10 games a few weeks ago I certainly would have taken it.”
