The support by the Latics travelling army at Fratton Park has gained high praise from the club. Some Portsmouth supporters were incensed at the conclusion of the game which the Latics won 2-1 and some clashed with stewards and police outside the ground. The well behaved Latics fans were asked to walk along the side of the pitch and exit at the opposite end of the stadium.
Ritchie Wellens said, “The fans were unbelievable from start to finish. They made themselves heard and at times out sung the Portsmouth fans. I was delighted for them after the game.”
Chief Executive Mark Moisley added, “Thankfully our supporters remained calm despite the chaos outside the ground, and were a credit to the club. We will be discussing the situation with the EFL as the well being of our travelling fans is paramount. We receive fantastic support away from home and have a duty to ensure that fans can attend fixtures in a safe environment.”
