David Dunn, a free agent after his release from Blackburn Rovers, was watching the friendly game with Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night. The club are hoping to persuade the 35-year-old midfielder to extend his playing career with Athletic. He has been linked with a pay-as-you-play deal at Bolton and a player-coach job at Accrington Stanley in addition to other offers, some abroad.
Dunn holds a UEFA Pro License qualification and hopes to eventually become a football coach. He said, “I still think I’m the best player. Every competitor needs that opinion of themselves, and I still do. I love playing football. I want to play as long as I can.”
Latics boss Darren Kelly admitted, “We are by no means the finished article and we want to bring in the right, key personnel.”
