Dowie linked with the Hammers

Athletic gained a memorable win at West Ham in the Worthington Cup and manager Iain Dowie was immediately linked with the Hammers management seat. Current Hammers boss Glenn Roeder is under increasing pressure as his
team have still to win a home game this season.

Dowie said, “Would I like to manage in the Premiership? Absolutely. Would I like to manage the team I supported as a boy? Of course. But that isn’t the scenario at the moment and I’m totally committed to Oldham Athletic. I’m concentrating on my job here because we have a chance of doing something good. Nothing has been achieved yet, but it will be if we keep repeating the standards we set in beating a Premiership side. I felt for Glenn Roeder when he was coming in for stick from the fans. He needs a win and don’t be surprised if it comes against Leeds on Sunday. In some ways this result was a double-edged sword for me because I’m a West Ham fan and would love to see the club doing better. But I’m absolutely delighted with my players. I asked the lads for quality and honesty, which I got in abundance – it’s a fantastic feat to come to a great place like this and win.”

The win was secured by a Carlo Corazzin diving header from a corner in the 42nd. minute. The only down side was that Fitz Hall picked up his fifth booking of the season and must now serve an automatic one-match ban. He will miss
the home game against Cheltenham. The fourth-round draw is made on Saturday.

Dowie added, “I’m not bothered who we get because I hadn’t really planned on us reaching this stage. A plum tie at home would be a nice reward, or maybe a minnow like Manchester United!”
