Dowie comments on another win

Iain Dowie’s (pictured) thoughts after the Mansfield win were as follows when he said, “We have worked hard on building mentally tough people, but the truth is that you’ve either got it or you haven’t. We have it in abundance, which you
could see from our defensive performance — Fitz Hall and Will Haining put their heads in where it hurts, Chris Armstrong was excellent and David Beharall, who didn’t have the best of times on the ball, was still getting his foot into important tackles. It wasn’t a great spectacle and I can’t say we deserved to win, but we looked likely to break them down early on.”

“Clyde might have scored if his chance hadn’t come in the first five minutes, but it was a big bonus to have him back. I spent a lot of time with him last week on ‘Wembley’ (the Boundary Park training pitch) and his response was tremendous. He desperately wanted to play — he had trained very well, he lifts the other players and the fans absolutely adore him.”

“I’m obviously not happy with the decision to send off David Eyres, but we showed resilience after that and Mansfield were only having long-range shots. I always thought we could win it after the game went 10 against 10, although you
begin to wonder when time is running out. We didn’t get our forwards in much, but Wayne Andrews was a threat and it was a very disappointing tackle on him when Keith (Curle) was sent off.”

“That was probably the only bad challenge of the game. There were too many stoppages for either side to play flowing football and let’s just say the referee had an off-day. It was definitely a penalty, though, and Fitz always fancied it
because we had lost our two main takers. Paul Murray was floating around and Wayne Andrews might have had a go but for a knock to his hip, but Fitz took a pressure penalty outstandingly well — he’s a bag of nerves that lad!”
