The decision by Football League clubs to adopt UEFA's Financial Fair Play framework has been welcomed by the Latics. All the clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two voted in favour of the new financial measures which are aimed at ensuring the clubs don't get too much in debt by limiting players wages to a proportion of the club's total turnover.
Chairman Simon Corney has confirmed his opinion that it has been "long overdue." The cumulative debt of the 72 League clubs exceeds £700million and Mr. Corney said, “The situation is out of control and half the clubs are on the brink. Clubs have suddenly realised that the current financial situation is not sustainable which is why they overwhelmingly supported Financial Fair Play. There is no way clubs in the Championship can afford to play players £25,000-£30,000 each week. No wonder they are on the brink of administration. If something isn't done it won't be just Oldham which will go pop, but the game as a whole.”
“We will only be able to spend a sum relative to the number of fans coming through the gate. A lot of clubs will suffer but it will force them to put their own houses in order. We will find it hard ourselves on gates of between 3,000 and 3,500. If we were to get 6,000 attendances however, we would be in a great position.”
