Athletic went to Barrow with an unbeaten pre-season run but it came to an end as they went down 3-1. Barrow were two goals up in the first sixteen minutes but Dale Stephens pulled one back before Walker got the Holker Street boys two goals in the lead again on the hour mark.
Manager John Sheridan did a lot of chopping and changing from the Hull draw as he tackled his brother's, ex-Latics Darren Sheridan, team. Steve Williams made his Athletic debut in the experimental team but had to retire injured after an hour of the game.
Their next challenge is a trip to Bradford City on Saturday.
