Latics manager Lee Johnson is still looking for a creative midfielder but he laughed off the prospect of trying to entice lifelong Latics fan Paul Scholes out of retirement. He told the Manchester Evening News, “I could try. I'm sure if he fancied it he'd have let us know by now. I did see his little genius chip in the seven-a-side.”
He hinted that chairman Simon Corney may have already had a crack at trying to tempt the Middleton maestro into a blue shirt. He went on, “Put it this way, you know Simon! I respect Paul Scholes enough to not ask him but Simon will get in the mix of anything. You're talking about a world class player that's retired after a world class career. Why would he want to spoil that adulation by playing for me? Listen - the door's open. Even to Maradona. I'm sure I could get him 10 minutes.”
