Paul Dickov was impressed with his teams convincing 5-2 beating of Chesterfield at Boundary Park on Saturday although he does believe that they can still make further improvement. The first half of the game was rivetting stuff and was played at a break-neck pace which began straight after the whistle went to begin the match. Robbie Simpson scored a first-half hat-trick and his performance showed Dickov that he would make a great permanent acquisition when his loan time finally expires. Kieran Lee and Shefki Kuqi also scored and exposed the frailties of a poor Spireites team that former player and boss John Sheridan now manages.
Dickov said, “It is nice to win three games on the bounce and it was a really good performance against Chesterfield. Being picky, as I am, I was disappointed with the two goals we conceded, but to score five goals and play the way we did for the majority of the game was satisfying and some of the football we played was exceptional. There were also some very good individual performances. They were three good goals (Simpsons) and the first one was a fantastic finish which ended a good move. The second was a terrific free kick which couldn't have gone any closer to the top corner and the third was sheer desire. Robbie never gave up, tackled the keeper and got his rewards for it.”
Sheridan also suffered a 5-2 defeat at FC Franchise when he was Athletic boss and it turned out to be the final nail in the coffin as he was fired after the game. Could the 5-2 defeat of Chesterfield at Oldham be a coincidence or maybe it is just a bad omen. Poor Mr. Sheridan must be worried over his future after his club finished the day in bottom spot in the league.
